Big difference

I spent the morning recruiting new students, and despite the double-cohort we're getting this year, the candidates were not exactly awe-inspiring. Is it really unreasonable to expect university graduates to understand the difference between knowing something and knowing of something? If you know how to write programs in C++, you know it; but if you've only heard that C++ is a programming language, then you only know of it: big difference.
